The Rocklin Friends of the Library's purpose is to generate community interest in the library services and facilities. You can support us in this effort by joining RFOL, donating your gently used books, shopping our bookstore or by making a monetary donation. Your donations will help us to purchase new books, continue children's and summer reading programs and to support your library.
Summer Reading Program
The Rocklin Library’s Summer Reading Program (SRP) begins on June 2 and ends on August 2. This year’s theme is “Paws to Read.” The SRP is a nationwide initiative that encourages and rewards library patrons. Whether to learn new things, escape into another world, or simply to have fun, reading over the summer break helps stop the “Summer Slide”—the loss of reading achievement when school is not in session.
One big benefit of public Library Reading Programs is that they are held outside school buildings, which helps reduce any negativity about learning over the summer. When schools are out for the summer, the public library is here to help!
A key component of the SRP is self selection of reading materials, which motivates struggling readers and helps them to become better readers, writers and spellers. 8 out of 10 studies indicate students who read recreationally out-perform those who don’t.
Summer is the most difficult time for parents to find things for kids to do. The SRP allows for summer reading opportunities and activities that are fun, easily available and “free.”
So how will it work? Visit the Rocklin Library on or after June 2 and sign-up for the SRP. You’ll be given a reading log that guides you to a summer of reading. After you’ve completed all or portions of the log, come back to the Library to receive tickets which you can enter into a drawing for fabulous gift baskets! Extra tickets can be earned by completing “reading recess” challenges, so keep coming back for more chances to win.
